Do one financial task a day.

“Not again.” Marta lets out a long, heavy sigh. Her body feels heavy, as if her blood turned to molasses. “I forgot to pay my credit card bill again. This time I’ll set up autopay.” She has forgotten to pay her bill before and feels stupid she let it happen one more time.

She shoves the credit card statement in her top drawer and flips open her laptop. “First, I need to check Facebook and my email, then I’ll set up auto pay for my credit card.”

An hour later, Marta closes her laptop, feeling great about answering all her emails. She forgot all about setting up autopay. She leaves to meet with clients. The late fees increase.

Marta is a successful real estate agent. She is great with clients, takes care of all the transaction details of buying and selling homes, and consistently exceeds her sales goals. She also avoids her business and personal financial responsibilities, which makes her feel bad about herself.

Get clarity about your finances; do one financial task each day. Make a list of all money-related tasks. Take three deep breaths if you feel anxious.

Open your mail
Review your bank statement
Schedule an appointment with your accountant
Close an account you no longer use
Ask for help

Over the next month Marta completed one financial task a day. She felt both uncomfortable and inspired. Her clarity increased along with her self confidence that she is learning how to be responsible for her financial well-being.

Avoidance is not a strategy.
